Riding for the Disabled Association
(Mid-Derbyshire Group)
Object:
The object of the Association is captured in the following statement:
“Our aim, in simple terms, is to provide the opportunity of riding or carriage driving to disabled people who might benefit in their general health and well being”
Mid-Derbyshire Riding for the Disabled is a member group of the National RDA and began with a few borrowed ponies, taken in a borrowed lorry, to borrowed premises. Over the years the group has grown and now has the benefit of owning its own Riding Centre at Tansley, near Matlock, which was officially opened by The Princess Royal and RDA Patron, H.R.H. The Princess Anne on 23 June 1978. This consists of a small indoor school; tack room and stable block, a lovely new outdoor ménage, as well as a small amount of grazing and, of course, our three ponies.
The group caters for about 70 riders of all ages and disabilities, in four riding sessions per week. No charges are made. The riders come from as far afield as Derby, Bakewell, Belper and Alfreton as well as the Matlock area itself.
“The freer step, the fuller breath,
The wide horizon’s grander view.”
Samuel Longfellow - 1874
